Introducing PANAQUA™ Filtration for PFAS Contaminated Water Treatment in Compliance with EPA Standards.

In a landmark move, the United States government has taken decisive action in the fight against perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as “forever chemicals.” In April, 2024, the administration finalized strict limits on these persistent pollutants in drinking water, heralding a significant step towards safeguarding public health and mitigating the risks associated with PFAS contamination.

PFAS compounds pose a pervasive and enduring threat to our environment and health, persisting indefinitely in the ecosystem and accumulating in water sources. Linked to a range of health issues including low birth weight, liver disease, and various cancers, these chemicals demand urgent attention and effective remediation strategies.

The new regulations, crafted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), represent a watershed moment in environmental policy, marking the first national drinking water limits on toxic PFAS. Under these regulations, utilities are mandated to reduce PFAS levels to the lowest measurable extent, a move estimated to benefit over 100 million people and prevent thousands of illnesses, including cancers.

McCue is pleased to introduce PANAQUA™ Filtration to help address PFAS contamination.

One of the most effective treatment processes for PFAS-contaminated water is activated carbon filtration. PANAQUA™ Filtration is a containerized, plug & purify activated carbon filtration solution for PFAS.  It can also be configured as a sand filter, multi-media filter, or specialty media filter if pretreatment is required.  PANAQUA™ Filtration maximizes treatment capacity while minimizing space, making it a viable option for water utilities navigating the challenges posed by PFAS contamination.

While hailed as a significant stride towards cleaner water, the EPA’s new regulations have not been without contention. Water utilities have raised concerns over the financial burden associated with implementing treatment systems, arguing that the costs will inevitably trickle down to consumers. PANAQUA™ Filtration is a fully integrated, weather proof treatment unit that can be added to existing Water Treatment Plants to simplify installation and reduce the cost and downtime of Plant upgrades.

By proactively addressing PFAS contamination, the EPA estimates that the regulations will prevent nearly 10,000 deaths over decades and significantly reduce the incidence of serious illnesses. Moreover, the societal and economic costs of inaction far exceed the investments required for remediation efforts.

The urgency of addressing PFAS contamination cannot be overstated. As these chemicals persist in the environment and accumulate over time, the need for robust regulatory measures and effective remediation technologies is paramount. With the implementation of stringent limits on PFAS in drinking water, coupled with innovative solutions like PANAQUA™ Filtration, we are poised to usher in a new era of clean water.

As we confront the challenges posed by “forever chemicals,” it is imperative that we remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding our water resources and protecting public health. Through collective action and sustained investment in water treatment infrastructure, we can ensure a brighter, healthier future for generations to come.

The United States has taken a major step toward protecting the environment from PFAS that will serve as an example to other nations, including Canada.
